Your first MSC cruise

So, you’re considering an MSC cruise.
Now what?

Practical answers from our sailings: compare experiences, plan your island day and prepare for life onboard. Choose a topic below to get started.

A few answers before you dive in

Your MSC questions, answered.

What’s included in my cruise fare?

Think of your fare as the foundation of the holiday: your booked accommodation, meals in the included main dining venues and buffet, and much of the ship’s entertainment. Drinks, paid internet, specialty dining and excursions depend on what your fare or package includes. Check your booking for service charges and any extras, rather than assuming every venue or activity is included.

Explore dining options
Do I need a drink or internet package?

You don’t need either to enjoy your cruise. Start with what’s already included in your booking, then consider how you actually travel: the drinks you order, how often you want to connect and whether streaming matters. Compare package terms with paying as you go, and check island coverage before assuming a drink package works everywhere.

Compare drinks & Wi-Fi options
Can I enjoy MSC without booking Yacht Club?

Absolutely. Yacht Club offers its own private spaces and service, but a wonderful holiday doesn’t depend on booking it. Bella, Fantastica and Aurea give you other ways to enjoy the ship. Choose around the cabin, dining flexibility and benefits you’ll genuinely use—our own love of MSC has grown through different ways of sailing.

Find your experience
What should I reserve before sailing?

Start with the things you’d be disappointed to miss: a cabana, a particular excursion or a specialty dining experience. Read cancellation terms and what the purchase includes, save the confirmation, and check any reservation details with the onboard team. A purchased dining package isn’t always the same as a confirmed table at your preferred time.

Read our reservation tips
What if a pre-purchased extra is missing?

Bring your receipt or confirmation, booking number and details of the included service to Guest Services or the team responsible for that purchase. Your confirmations give the team a clear record to investigate. Our personal tips chapter explains how we organize them; stay patient while the team checks what happened.

See our receipt-folder advice
Where can I find help once onboard?

Guest Services is a useful starting point for account questions and general assistance. Your cabin steward can help with cabin needs; the excursions team handles tour and island-rental questions; the dining team can check restaurant reservations. For Yacht Club guests, the concierge is another point of contact. The MSC for Me app, where supported, can also help you find information.

What feels different about MSC?

A little of the world travels with you

You may hear several languages as you explore the ship. MSC communicates in English, Italian, German, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, with language order reflecting the mix of guests onboard. That mix changes from sailing to sailing; there isn’t one fixed audience or atmosphere across the fleet.

Make room for your own holiday rhythm

Some people want a full schedule from breakfast to bedtime. Others would happily spend an afternoon watching the sea, linger over dinner, and find a lounge for music afterward. Neither approach belongs to one nationality. Rather than assuming all Europeans or Americans vacation alike, think about the kind of day you enjoy—and leave yourself room to discover it onboard.

Familiar pleasures, with an international flavour

Dining brings together Mediterranean influences and international dishes. Evenings can include music, dance and other stage performances, with the programme varying by ship and sailing. Take a look at the daily programme to see what’s happening and choose what appeals to you.

Your ship and your booking matter

An MSC cruise isn’t a single, identical experience. The ship, itinerary, time of year and experience you book all help shape your holiday. Dining arrangements, venues and services can differ, so check the details for your particular sailing rather than relying on a review of another ship.

Explore the MSC fleet by ship family and destination

You don’t have to recreate our first cruise. We hope you’ll find the moments that make yours special.

A welcome that can begin before you sail

Your first MSC cruise.
A little recognition from the start.

MSC Voyagers Club and Status Match are worth reviewing before you book. Loyalty status and your booked experience are separate; discounts and benefits depend on the current terms for your booking country.

Explore Voyagers Club & Status Match
Get to know the programme

MSC Voyagers Club

MSC’s free loyalty programme rewards members through tier-based savings and privileges. Its levels are Welcome, Classic, Silver, Gold, Diamond and Blue Diamond.

Benefits differ by level. Examples include a 5% cruise discount from Classic upward, subject to exclusions, and selected onboard discounts or privileges. Check the official chart for your tier’s full details.

Bring your travel history

Start with a status match

Submit proof of your current eligible loyalty membership through MSC’s application. MSC reviews the request and decides your matched tier; matching is not an automatic transfer of the same level name or every benefit.

Once approved, eligible benefits can apply to your first MSC sailing. Apply well before departure and confirm your Voyagers Club number is attached to your booking.

A few minutes now, something to look forward to

Gather your membership number and a clear copy of your current loyalty card, then review the programmes and terms shown on the application. Don’t count an unapproved match as a confirmed saving when comparing fares.

If you’ve already booked, ask MSC or your travel advisor which benefits can apply. A fare discount isn’t automatically added retrospectively. Use MSC’s current benefit chart to see what your approved tier offers.

Official MSC U.S. pages, checked October 2026. Eligibility, matching and benefits follow MSC’s current terms; use the programme for your booking country.

From morning coffee to an evening at sea

A day onboard

Explore the parts of a day at sea that appeal to you. Venues, hours and activities vary by ship and sailing.

MSC Seashore’s Long Island Pool under a blue sky with sun loungers and an ocean view
Room for a day in the sunshine: Long Island Pool, MSC Seashore. Photo: MSC Cruises.
Morning
Let the day begin gently

Imagine pulling back the curtains to find a different stretch of sea outside. Perhaps you’re ready for breakfast and a little exploring. Perhaps the first thing you want is a coffee and a few unhurried minutes to take it all in.

Look at the breakfast venues and hours in the daily programme. A buffet can suit a morning when everyone wants something different; check whether a main restaurant offers breakfast if you’d prefer a seated meal. Where you get your coffee—and whether it costs extra—depends on the venue and your package.

Picture yourself here: an early start, or a leisurely breakfast?

Late morning
Find your favourite corner

With breakfast behind you, the ship begins to feel like a place you know. You might head outside, explore the lounges, or choose an activity from the programme. A lively pool area and a quieter indoor corner can offer very different versions of the same morning.

Give yourself a little time to find what suits you. Facilities differ across the fleet, and some activities require a booking or an extra charge. You don’t need to try them all to feel that you’ve made the most of being onboard.

Afternoon
A little activity. A little nothing.

Lunch can become the easy pause between whatever you chose that morning and whatever appeals next. Then perhaps it’s a swim, a book, an organised activity, or simply watching sunlight move across the water.

Leave some space in your plans. A cruise can be full of things to do, but an afternoon with very little on the agenda may be exactly what you came for. Check access, reservations and charges before choosing a spa visit or a paid attraction.

What sounds like a holiday to you: joining in, or switching off?

Evening
Let dinner become part of the occasion

As daylight softens, you might return to your stateroom and get ready for the evening. Dinner can be a chance to share the day’s discoveries, try something new, and enjoy having a little more time together.

Know your dining arrangement before planning the rest of your night. Fixed seating and flexible options depend on the ship and experience booked. Specialty dining has its own booking arrangements and charges; a package should be checked for exactly what it includes.

After dinner
Follow the music—or find the quiet

A theatre performance, music in a lounge, or an evening event might tempt you to stay out a little longer. Check the daily programme for the actual line-up and any reservation requirements. Theme nights vary, so let your sailing’s programme guide you rather than expecting every event on every cruise.

Or perhaps your favourite ending is a quiet seat and a conversation that doesn’t need to hurry. There’s no obligation to close the dance floor. Choose the evening you’ll be happy to remember.

The best day onboard doesn’t have to be the busiest. It’s the one that feels like your holiday.

That’s what we hope this guide helps you discover: enough confidence to find your way around, and enough freedom to enjoy the moments you came for.

Find the experience that fits your holiday.

Choose the holiday you want to have

The right experience can change how your holiday feels.

Choose around the benefits you will use: price, cabin selection, dining flexibility or private spaces. Compare the total fare and extras for the same sailing and party.

Compare Bella, Fantastica, Aurea & Yacht Club
Value & simplicity

Bella

MSC assigns the cabin number under this guarantee-style option; you don’t select its exact location. Depending on the category and ship, a view may be obstructed or face a promenade.

Consider it if: price matters most and you’re comfortable letting MSC place you.

Would an unexpected cabin location take away from your holiday? If so, compare a cabin-selection fare.

More control over your booking

Fantastica

Choose your cabin and location, subject to availability and operational changes. Dinner-seating requests remain subject to availability. Room-service delivery benefits don’t mean every menu item is free.

Consider it if: choosing where you stay matters more than adding a private retreat.

Think about lifts, nearby venues, your preferred deck and the cabin layout—not just its category name.

Flexibility & time to unwind

Aurea

Includes My Choice dining during restaurant hours, priority boarding, and thermal-area access for adults by reservation. Solarium access is included where offered; facilities differ by ship.

Consider it if: flexible dinner plans and relaxation benefits are things you’ll actually use.

Aurea is part of the wider ship experience. It does not provide a Yacht Club butler or access to Yacht Club’s reserved venues.

A private retreat within the ship

MSC Yacht Club

Dedicated dining and lounge spaces, a private sundeck, and 24-hour butler and concierge service create a distinct onboard experience. Premium Extra drinks, Browse Wi-Fi and thermal-suite access are included under their respective terms.

Consider it if: personal service and a reserved place to return to are central to your holiday.

Check your ship’s exact facilities. Pool provision varies, and Yacht Club is family-friendly rather than adults-only. Excursions and specialty dining aren’t automatically included.

⁵ A room diffuser is not expressly listed in MSC’s current U.S. experience benefits. Some guests report receiving one, but confirm it for your sailing before treating it as an included gift. MED bath products and a room diffuser are different amenities.

¹ Subject to availability, category, fare and operational changes. A guarantee booking does not let you choose the cabin number.

² Dining arrangements depend on ship and booking. Seashore and Seaside offer Dine on Your Time for eligible Bella/Fantastica bookings; confirm your selection and availability. A dinner-seating request is not a guarantee.

³ Yacht Club venues differ by ship; not every Yacht Club has a pool. Reserved areas are for Yacht Club guests and are family-friendly.

⁴ Package conditions and limits apply. Browse is not a streaming package. Specialty dining, excursions and spa treatments are not automatically covered.

“Not a standard benefit” means it is not advertised as part of that experience, rather than unavailable through another offer or loyalty benefit. The chart covers the advertised experience extras; promotions, loyalty perks and cabin-specific amenities can differ. Aurea suite-only extras are labelled separately. Room-service delivery and the cost of food are separate—check the menu and booking terms.

Compare the holiday, not just the starting fare

Price each option for the same sailing and party, then add the extras you actually want. Consider drinks, Wi-Fi, spa access and any dining plans. Something you wouldn’t use isn’t a saving, and a higher fare isn’t automatically the right choice.

If travelling with friends or family, talk about where you want to spend time together. Guests outside Yacht Club cannot join you in its reserved areas; you can meet in the wider ship. That can matter more to your holiday than another benefit on a list.

Choose the experience that makes room for what you love about a holiday.

Our first Yacht Club welcome became part of our love story, but your favourite memories may begin somewhere entirely different. Understanding your choices gives you a better chance to settle in, relax, and enjoy the cruise you hoped for.

A little planning before you sail

Drinks & Wi-Fi: plan ahead, spend wisely.

Check what your fare includes before buying packages. Compare the full cost for your party, drink exclusions and island coverage. Alcoholic packages have a 15-alcoholic-drink daily limit. For Wi-Fi, choose the device count you need; activated devices cannot be swapped.

Compare Drink Packages & Wi-Fi

Why look at packages when you book?

MSC advertises advance-purchase savings on drinks and pre-cruise internet rates. A booking offer may bundle both into the fare, while your booking account may show separate package offers later. Discounts vary by sailing and promotion; there isn’t one saving we can promise everyone.

Compare three totals: the cruise-only fare plus extras, the fare that includes packages, and the cost of buying only what you expect to use. Keep the ship, dates, cabin and guests the same. A headline discount can look appealing without being the best total for your party.

Choose drinks around your tastes

Start with what you enjoy

Your usual holiday drinks

Think beyond cocktails: coffee, water and soft drinks may matter just as much to your day. Check whether your favourites are covered, where you can order them, and whether a speciality café is excluded.

If you drink very little, paying as you go may leave more room in your budget for something else you love.

Read the terms

Coverage matters

For new purchases on sailings departing from the United States, compare Premium Extra, Alcohol-Free and Minors packages. Easy is not an option for these U.S. departures. Non-U.S. sailings can have different choices; use the packages displayed for your actual booking. Packages have venue exclusions and purchase rules for guests sharing cabins or dining together. They cannot be shared.

Premium Extra currently covers Ocean Cay, with a different island selection. Don’t assume the Alcohol-Free or Minors package has the same coverage; check the island terms for your booking before relying on it.

Alcoholic packages have a 15-alcoholic-drink daily limit, including in Yacht Club. Package gratuities are included. Confirm price limits, exclusions and applicable party-wide purchase requirements—not just the package name.

A simple drinks value check

Estimate what you would normally buy on a day at sea and on a day ashore. Compare that total for the whole cruise with the actual package quote, including all guests who must purchase it. Use current menu prices and service charges for pay-as-you-go drinks.

Don’t feel you have to drink more to “get your money’s worth.” Convenience and knowing the cost ahead of time can have value, but unused drinks don’t create savings.

Wi-Fi: staying in touch or streaming?

Choose the connection you expect to use
OptionWhat it’s designed forBefore buying
BrowseMessaging, email and general browsingDedicated streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube aren’t covered.
Browse & StreamStreaming access as well as browsingAsk whether you’ll actually stream enough to want the upgrade.
No internet packageTime offline, with selected onboard digital servicesMSC for Me app features don’t require a paid internet package on supported ships.

Count devices before buying. A phone, tablet and laptop are three devices; MSC’s terms register activated devices to the package and don’t permit swapping them. A one-device plan isn’t a rotating connection for your whole collection.

Ship internet can vary with location and demand, so a streaming plan isn’t a promise of home-like performance. If connection is essential, review the current terms and discuss your needs with MSC before relying on it.

Before you press “buy”

  • Check your confirmation for packages already included.
  • Compare the full price for your party, not just a per-person headline.
  • Read drink exclusions, Ocean Cay coverage and purchase requirements.
  • Choose the internet level and device count you actually need.
  • Check purchase deadlines, cancellation terms and the current offer in your booking account.
A good package makes your holiday easier. A good saving leaves you paying less for something you genuinely wanted.

An evening to savour

A table worth looking forward to.

Main dining rooms and the buffet are included. Specialty dining is optional: check the restaurant, menu, supplements and reservation terms for your ship before buying.

Explore Specialty Dining & Reservations

Begin with what’s already included

Your cruise includes meals in the main dining rooms and buffet. The main restaurant offers a served meal; the buffet gives you a more casual option. Check opening hours, your assigned dining arrangement and any items marked with an additional charge.

Aurea’s flexible dining and Yacht Club’s private restaurant are benefits of those experiences. Neither means that every specialty restaurant is included. You can have a wonderful cruise without purchasing a specialty meal.

What kind of evening sounds like you?

Settle in & savour

A steakhouse evening

If your idea of a treat is a leisurely dinner built around a steak, look at Butcher’s Cut where available. Picture whether that sounds like your holiday before choosing a package.

Try something different

A taste of discovery

Sushi, teppanyaki, seafood or tacos may offer a different mood. Browse your ship’s actual restaurants: the choices and package participation vary across the fleet.

Look at the atmosphere as well as the menu. Do you want a quiet conversation, a lively meal, or cooking that becomes part of the entertainment? “Special” doesn’t have to mean the most expensive option.

What does the meal price cover?

MSC’s current dining information describes fixed-price, multi-course meals with premium dishes available at a supplement. The menu and terms for your particular restaurant and offer are the details to rely on.

Ask which drinks your existing beverage package covers in that venue. Don’t treat the dining purchase as a drinks package. MSC currently advertises gratuities included in its dining packages; check the terms if ordering separately.

One special dinner—or several?

Multiple-meal offers can suit guests who already want to try several restaurants. Compare the eligible venues and meals with what you would otherwise book. Leave room for included dinners, port plans and spontaneous evenings, too.

  • Confirm the restaurant exists on your ship and participates in your offer.
  • Read the included menu, supplements and drinks coverage.
  • Check the total for everyone dining, including any children’s terms.
  • Confirm reservation, cancellation and date restrictions.
  • For Welcome Aboard, be comfortable committing to the first evening.
The best table is the one where you can settle in, enjoy the company, and let the evening unfold.

Before leaving home

A little preparation, a calmer arrival

Complete check-in, review your ticket’s arrival instructions and keep boarding details and required travel documents accessible. Document requirements depend on your nationality and itinerary; check MSC’s guidance for your own trip.

Save an offline copy of useful booking information. Check the terminal address, plan your journey with some breathing room, and keep the contact details for your transfer close at hand.

Picture arriving with the important things already within reach.

At the terminal

Follow the welcome, one step at a time

Use the check-in time on your ticket. Give labelled checked bags to designated staff, keep your documents with you, then follow check-in and security instructions.

If you’re unsure which queue or luggage area to use, ask before joining it. For priority or Yacht Club arrangements, follow the instructions associated with your booking.

Yacht Club has a dedicated check-in and butler welcome, with arrangements depending on the port. For us, that first welcome on Divina became the beginning of our MSC story. Your own first impressions may start in a completely different way.

That first step aboard

First stop: your assembly station

Keep your printed boarding pass in hand and head to your assigned muster station, also called your assembly station, for the crew to scan it. Look for the assembly station letter directly below your Experience level on the boarding pass. Ask a crew member to point you in the right direction if you’re unsure.

Watch the mandatory safety video on your phone through the MSC for Me app, where available, or on your stateroom television. The station check-in and the video are both part of completing your safety requirements; follow any additional instructions from the crew.

This is the boarding routine we share from our own experience. Procedures and boarding-pass layouts can vary by ship and port, so follow the crew’s directions if your sailing handles these steps differently.

Next: your stateroom

Drop your bags and begin to settle in

After your muster check-in, head to your stateroom to drop off your hand luggage when cabin access is permitted. In the routine we’ve experienced, your stateroom keys are waiting in an envelope inside the room. If your ship places them elsewhere, the crew will help you find them.

If you haven’t watched the safety video yet, this is a good moment to do so on the television and complete any required acknowledgement. Once those steps are taken care of, you can head out and enjoy the ship.

Now: time to explore

Find your bearings—and something to eat

With your bags put down and your safety requirements completed, let the pace soften. Ask where lunch is available and choose somewhere to settle in.

Start small: your cabin’s deck, a convenient lift lobby, a restaurant and a place where you’d like to sit later. You can discover the rest tomorrow.

The practical first steps are behind you. The holiday is yours to enjoy.

Check the essentials

Dinner & reservations

Confirm your dining arrangement and ask the dining team about any request or dietary need. If you’ve purchased specialty dining, arrange your table and time. Welcome Aboard is for tonight, so make that a priority.

Make space for your plans

Tonight & tomorrow

Look through the daily programme. Check whether activities you want require reservations, and where to make them. Choose a few things that matter to you; leave some room for whatever catches your eye.

Getting settled

Make the cabin feel like your own

When your cabin is available, take a few minutes to unpack the essentials and get comfortable. If something needs attention, let your cabin steward or Guest Services know.

Your Cruise Card is your cabin key and links purchases to your onboard account. Our account setup tips above explain how to get ready for purchases.

For your phone, switch to airplane mode and turn Wi-Fi back on. Connect using the ship’s instructions; onboard services and paid internet are different. Our Drinks & Wi-Fi chapter explains the options.

Sailaway

The moment the holiday feels real

When the departure announcements come, find a spot that feels right for you. It might be an open deck with a breeze on your face, or a quieter corner where you can watch the shoreline begin to slip away.

Maybe you’ll take a photograph. Maybe you’ll put your phone away. After the journeys, queues and little tasks of the day, this is a moment you can keep entirely for yourself.

The planning brought you here. Now there’s a whole sea of memories ahead.

Days onboard

Comfort comes first

Build around light, comfortable outfits, swimwear, a cover-up and shoes you can walk in. Add gym clothes if that’s part of your holiday. A light layer is useful when you move from a sunny deck into an air-conditioned lounge.

We’d choose pieces that can do more than one job, rather than a different outfit for every hour.

Evenings onboard

A little more polished

Pack a few dinner-ready options: long trousers with a collared shirt, a dress, or a skirt with a smart top. Choose shoes that feel comfortable enough for a stroll or a show afterward.

MSC lists shorts, flip-flops and tank tops as restricted for evening dining in main restaurants, specialty venues and Yacht Club. Follow the rules posted for your venue.

Gala Night: make it feel like you

Sailing for fewer than seven nights? Check whether Gala Night is scheduled before packing an outfit specifically for it. Don’t assume every sailing includes one; use the information for your ship and departure.

If dressing up is part of the fun, bring the outfit you’ve been waiting to wear. MSC encourages an elegant look, with room for your own style; a tuxedo or gown isn’t the only choice. T-shirts are excluded from its Gala Night dress guidance.

Our suggestion is simple: choose something you feel good in. One versatile outfit can work for a dressier evening and a special dinner, with a change of accessories.

Guests dressed in white dance beside the pool at an MSC Cruises White Party
A little white, a little music, a holiday evening together: MSC’s White Party. Photo: MSC Cruises.

White Night & a little party spirit

MSC suggests white clothing for its White Party and bright clothes for the Sunshine Party. Bring a white shirt, dress or another piece you’d enjoy wearing if joining the theme appeals to you.

Theme participation should feel fun, rather than another packing assignment. You don’t need an elaborate costume. Themes and schedules vary; check the daily programme and MSC for Me app for your sailing instead of counting on a particular party every cruise.

If your ideal evening is quiet music and a conversation, leave room for that too. There’s no need to plan every night around a party.

Pack for the ports, not just the ship

See Our Cruise Essentials →

Caribbean days

Sunshine & time outside

We’d bring breathable clothes, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a practical beach bag. Comfortable footwear matters for sightseeing as much as for a day on the sand.

Check the forecast close to departure. A small rain layer can be useful even on a holiday you’ve pictured in sunshine.

Mediterranean exploring

Walking & changing weather

For an autumn sailing, think in layers: comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket and clothes that suit both sightseeing and a cooler evening. Look at the forecast for each stop, not just the embarkation port.

Plan clothing that covers shoulders and knees for religious sites, and check local requirements before visiting.

The useful little things

  • Your everyday toiletries and the personal items that help you feel at home.
  • Glasses, contact-lens supplies and any medication you need.
  • Charging cables and a suitable plug adapter after checking your ship’s sockets and current electrical-item rules.
  • A small day bag for shore visits, and a separate bag for worn clothes.
  • Offline copies of useful travel details and reservation confirmations.

Pool towels and a cabin hairdryer are provided, so those can stay at home. If you like a particular sunscreen or toiletry, we’d pack it rather than rely on finding the same brand onboard.

A last look before you zip it closed

Lay out your outfits and imagine actually wearing them. Can the same shoes work with several choices? Will that extra outfit come out of the suitcase? Leave a little space for something you might bring home.

Beyond the gangway

Your day ashore:
explore with confidence.

Plan around the official all-aboard time and the time the ship is using. Check excursion meeting instructions and allow a return margin for transport, queues or tenders.

Choose how you’d like to explore

With MSC

A ship-booked excursion

A useful option if you want an organised outing and a clear meeting plan. MSC offers tours with different interests and activity levels, and its excursion guides can contact the ship if the unexpected happens.

Read the walking requirements, journey times, inclusions and cancellation terms. Check what MSC’s arrangements cover rather than assuming the ship can always wait.

With a local operator

An independent tour

You may prefer a smaller group or an itinerary shaped around your interests. Before booking, check recent reviews, meeting details, transport, cancellation terms and the operator’s arrangements for delays or missed port calls.

Tell them your ship, port and all-aboard time. A return guarantee from an outside company is its own promise; it does not mean MSC will hold the ship.

At your own pace

A day on your own

A walk, a café and a few places you’ve chosen can be enough. Check the actual distance from the berth or tender landing to the area you want to explore.

Know how you’ll get back before you set off, and leave room for traffic, queues and a change of plan. The port name alone doesn’t tell you how close the ship will be to the sights.

Docked or tendered: how you get ashore

Alongside the pier

A docked port

You leave by the gangway once the ship is cleared. There may still be a terminal walk, shuttle or transfer before you reach the town. Allow for that when planning an independent meeting time.

A boat transfer

A tender port

The ship anchors offshore and smaller boats carry guests to land. Follow the day’s instructions for tickets, queues and excursion groups. Allow time for boarding and the boat journey in both directions.

Conditions can affect service. If boarding a tender may be difficult for you, discuss access with MSC in advance; don’t assume the transfer is step-free.

Before leaving the ship

  • Confirm the all-aboard time in that day’s official instructions. It is your deadline to be back, not the advertised departure time.
  • Check the time the ship is using. Ask if ship time and local time differ; don’t rely only on your phone changing time automatically.
  • Read your excursion ticket for the meeting place and time—your group may meet onboard.
  • Bring your Cruise Card and any identification or documents required by the ship and local authorities.
  • Save the day’s port-agent or ship contact information and your meeting or return details offline.

Make the return part of your plan

Work backwards from all-aboard time and choose an earlier personal return target. Allow for the distance, local traffic, a delayed taxi, terminal checks or the tender queue. A short walk near the ship and a long drive inland need different margins.

If plans go wrong, contact your guide and the supplied ship or port contact promptly. Don’t wait until the deadline to ask for help. Independently exploring guests are responsible for returning on time.

You can also choose a quieter day

Going ashore is a choice, subject to any instructions for that port. If a slower morning onboard sounds lovely, that can be part of your holiday too. Check which venues are open and enjoy the day that suits you.

You don’t have to collect every sight. Sometimes one lovely moment is the memory you bring home.

Find Your Ocean Cay Spot

A few choices to help you start planning—not a reservation or a promise of beach conditions.

A little island time

Ocean Cay:
find your place by the sea.

For a first visit, a little planning helps: choose the beach that suits your day, know where you’ll eat, and decide whether a lounger, umbrella or cabana is worth reserving. Our maps bring those choices together.

Get to know the island before you arrive

Amenity reference map supplied by ForeverMSC. Explore map.

Use this map to get your bearings. It includes developing venues and beach areas; labels on a reference map do not confirm that every facility is open for your sailing. Check the island information provided onboard.

Getting around: trams, bridges & beach wheelchairs

In our experience, trams take guests from the dock toward South Beach and the bridge leading to North and Bimini beaches. They can save you part of the walk, but the trams don’t cross the bridge. If your day includes North or Bimini Beach, plan to walk from the bridge to your chosen spot.

Beach wheelchairs are available near the Ocean Cay Welcome Center for guests with mobility needs. Ask the island team there about availability and assistance. If walking distances are a concern, speak with the ship’s accessibility team before your visit to help plan your day. Tram routes and services may change; confirm the arrangements when you arrive.

Find your beach

What’s nearby matters

North Beach and South Beach face the lagoon. When choosing where to spend your day, look beyond the water: how far are the food venues, bars, restrooms and the route back to the ship?

A spot beside a bar may be convenient; another beach may suit a quieter afternoon. Let the map help you choose around your priorities.

Make yourself comfortable

Plan your seating & shade

Beach sunbeds and rental umbrellas cost extra. Don’t arrive expecting a complimentary beach lounger. Casual seating is scattered around the island, but it isn’t the same as having your own lounger for the day.

The amenity map marks some installed umbrellas as free, and MSC notes limited seating at Lighthouse Beach. These are separate from paid rental sets; availability is limited. Check what’s included in your booking and beach area.

A cabana can become your base for the day

The standard cabana setup we share from our own experience accommodates up to six guests and includes loungers, towels, two floating mats and a cooler stocked with water. Check the capacity and inclusions of the exact rental in your booking account; cabana categories and arrangements can differ.

Reserve early if a cabana matters to your plans. They can sell out quickly. Review the available beach locations as soon as rentals appear for your sailing, and confirm how the booking covers an overnight or two-day island visit.

Choose a cabana with the surroundings in mind

Click to EnlargeOcean Cay cabana reference map showing individual numbered cabana locations, including Yacht Club cabanas
ForeverMSC’s cabana location reference. Explore map.

This supplied cabana map has small labels at its original resolution. Use it alongside the amenity map and confirm locations with MSC; it isn’t a live inventory or a guarantee that a particular number can be reserved.

Our beach reference places cabanas 12–19 on North Beach and 20–37 on South Beach. Before confirming a rental, ask which beach it is on and how allocation of the specific cabana works. Compare nearby food, bars and bathrooms rather than choosing by number alone.

Which drink packages work on Ocean Cay?

Check island coverage before relying on your package
Package or experienceWhat to know on the island
Premium ExtraValid for covered non-alcoholic and selected alcoholic drinks. The island selection differs from the ship’s menu.
MinorsValid when the child is accompanied by an adult with a Premium Extra package, under MSC’s package terms.
Alcohol-FreeDon’t assume island coverage. MSC’s island guidance specifically identifies Premium Extra and the conditional Minors coverage; confirm your package’s terms before sailing.
Older or other packagesUse the conditions attached to your booking. Older advice about Easy or Easy Plus may describe a different package or sailing period.
MSC Yacht ClubIncluded beverages are served at the reserved Ocean House Restaurant and Beach. Yacht Club also includes Premium Extra, subject to its coverage and limits.

Keep your Cruise Card handy for purchases. A cabana’s water supply doesn’t make every drink included, and a package doesn’t cover every menu item. Check with the bar before ordering anything you’re uncertain about.

Lunch, a snack & a little time to wander

Seakers Food Hall and Boho Food Hall both offer complimentary food on Ocean Cay. Selected food trucks also offer included options, alongside outlets or items that cost extra. Check the day’s opening hours and prices; the ship also has dining available at selected times if you prefer to go back onboard.

Use the amenity map to find a convenient place to eat near your chosen beach. If you have a food allergy or dietary requirement, discuss island options with the ship’s dining team before heading ashore.

Before you leave the ship

  • Bring your Cruise Card, sun protection, beach essentials and any needed medication.
  • Confirm your rental’s check-in location, included items and return time.
  • Check which food venues and activities are open that day.
  • Know your all-aboard time, even during an overnight stay.
  • Leave a little time simply to enjoy the water and the view.

If your itinerary includes an evening on the island, check the programme for lighthouse entertainment and the return arrangements. An overnight at Ocean Cay gives you another way to enjoy the destination; it doesn’t make every service available around the clock.

Find your patch of shade, let the sea set the pace, and make the day your own.

More horizons

What’s next for MSC’s islands?

That familiar turquoise water is only the beginning. MSC is developing new ways to enjoy Ocean Cay and creating a neighboring island with a character of its own.

Ocean Cay’s next chapter

MSC’s announced upgrades include four additional dining venues, the adults-only Paradise Sands beach, and an enhanced Seakers Cove family area with a playground, splashpad and water-based ropes course.

More cabana choices and a new MSC Foundation marine conservation experience are also planned. An extended pier will allow two ships to dock at the same time.

Introducing Sandy Cay

Adjacent to Ocean Cay, Sandy Cay is being developed for MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests as a more intimate island retreat, centered on relaxation, wellness and the natural beauty of The Bahamas.

MSC has announced plans for dining, private retreats and spaces to unwind. A groundbreaking ceremony in September 2026 marked another step toward its scheduled 2028 opening.

Little things we wish we’d known

A few things we always
bring along—including patience.

Our most useful tip: keep receipts and confirmations for every pre-purchased extra. We also bring the toiletries we prefer, learn the ship layout and confirm our cabana and dining arrangements onboard.

Read Our Practical Onboard Tips

A little bathroom planning goes a long way

On our sailings, washcloths and bar soap haven’t been routinely set out in the cabin. Our cabin stewards have been happy to provide washcloths when asked. If you prefer bar soap, bring your own—we keep ours in a travel soap container.

We’ve found Med by MSC shower gel and shampoo supplied in the shower dispensers. Some guests are perfectly happy with them; others prefer their own skin and hair products. Cabin supplies can vary, so pack what you personally need rather than assuming a particular brand or item will be there.

These are products we’ve used, linked as ordinary product references. Check dimensions, suitable mounting surfaces and weight limits before buying; shower layouts differ by cabin and ship.

Pack your patience in the carry-on

Everyone is excited to start their holiday, and sometimes it feels as though everyone arrives at once. Lines can grow, and a wait outside the terminal feels longer still when the weather isn’t kind.

We’ve learned to leave some breathing room in our first-day expectations. Terminal processing, port clearance or inspections can affect boarding. Keep essentials handy, dress for the conditions and follow the team’s updates. Patience won’t shorten the queue, but it can make the beginning of your holiday feel a little gentler.

Find your quiet corner before you sail

We like to explore our ship online before boarding, looking at the deck plans and venues to find spaces that suit us. You could often find us enjoying a drink in the Sky Lounge on MSC Meraviglia or MSC Grandiosa. We’ve also enjoyed their Horizon Pool areas, alongside our Aurea retreat at Top 19.

Those have been favorite places for a more grown-up atmosphere on our sailings. Check your ship’s current venue descriptions, age restrictions and onboard signs; adult-only arrangements and access rules aren’t identical across the fleet. Aurea sun-deck access is tied to the experience and the ship’s arrangements.

Our two first-day missions

First · Our island plans

We visit the excursions desk to request our favorite Ocean Cay cabana location and confirm our rental arrangements. It’s a request, rather than a promise of a particular number—availability and allocation are up to the island team. Reserve the cabana early, then ask onboard about your preferred spot.

Then · A table to look forward to

We confirm our specialty dining dates and times with the onboard dining team. Even when an app or pre-cruise process lets us arrange a reservation, we like to check that the ship has it. A confirmation and receipt in our folder make that conversation easier if something is missing.

Once those little jobs are done, we can relax into the holiday instead of wondering whether our plans are in place.

A planner, a free spirit—and room for both

I like knowing how our days will unfold. My wife prefers to take things as they come, especially entertainment and meals. Neither approach is wrong; the holiday works best when there’s room for both.

That’s one reason we often choose an Aurea Experience stateroom. Its flexible dining in the assigned dining room, during the applicable opening hours, lets us enjoy some structure without fixing every evening to a seating time. We can make plans and still leave room for the mood of the moment.

Plan the things that matter to you. Leave a little room for the sea to surprise you.

These are our personal experiences and preferences, gathered over several MSC sailings. Products, amenities, access rules and onboard processes can change. We’ll keep adding to this collection as we sail and discover more.

Your last evening & disembarkation

One last sunset.
A gentle journey home.

Read your departure instructions the night before. Keep tomorrow’s clothes, documents, medication and valuables with you; check your bill and leave time for clearance and the journey home.

Plan Your Last Evening & Disembarkation

Read your departure instructions before dinner

MSC provides departure instructions and luggage tags in your cabin. Check your assigned group, meeting place, bag-collection deadline and cabin-vacating time. Your sailing’s instructions take priority over general advice.

We’d suggest taking a photo of the instructions and your tags, then putting your morning essentials together before heading out for the evening. If you need mobility assistance or have a transfer to catch, speak with Guest Services ahead of time.

Let MSC handle the larger bags

For assisted disembarkation, attach the supplied tags and put bags outside your cabin by the instructed deadline the night before. Follow your assigned departure group; luggage is collected in the terminal by tag number.

Make your suitcase easy to recognize with a distinctive strap or ribbon, and check its identification before walking away with it.

Walk-off disembarkation

Walk-off disembarkation, also called self-assist, means keeping your luggage with you overnight and carrying all your own bags off the ship. Departure depends on the ship being cleared and the crew’s instructions; docking time alone isn’t permission to leave.

Think about what you can comfortably manage through queues, lifts and the terminal. A small rolling case feels different from several heavy bags. Ask whether this option suits your circumstances before choosing it.

Give your account one final look

Review your bill and resolve unfamiliar charges before leaving. Cash-account guests should settle the account and collect any remaining balance through Guest Services. All balances need to be cleared before disembarkation.

Save a copy of your statement for your records. Our onboard account section explains payment setup and temporary card holds; a pending authorization is different from the final settled charge.

Make the final morning easy on yourself

Check breakfast arrangements and leave enough time to eat without rushing. Before closing the cabin door, give the safe, wardrobe, drawers, bathroom and bedside sockets one last look. Chargers have a remarkable talent for staying behind.

Keep your travel documents and Cruise Card accessible, rather than tucked into the bag you’ll have to open in a queue. Follow announcements and the designated waiting arrangements.

Leave breathing room for the journey home

Allow time for clearance, queues, luggage collection, border formalities, the airport journey and airline check-in. Tell Guest Services about your flight so they can advise on departure arrangements.

Before booking a flight or pickup, compare the port’s location with the actual airport you’ll use. Confirm your driver’s meeting point and a way to contact them. A realistic buffer is much more pleasant than spending your last morning watching the clock.

If you’re staying locally, ask your hotel about luggage storage before check-in. That can turn the hours between ship and room into a relaxed lunch or another little adventure.

The suitcases come home with us. A little piece of our hearts stays at sea.
